How We Fund Projects

The Campion Foundation funds projects by invitation only in three program areas: protecting wilderness, ending homelessness and strengthening nonprofits.

Protecting Wilderness. The geographic scope of the foundation’s wilderness protection program encompasses Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alaska and western Canada — specifically, British Columbia, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

We fund select proposals and activities that:

  • Permanently protect intact, ecologically important ecosystems
  • Protect landscapes that provide connectivity for wildlife species between existing protected lands
  • Reduce imminent threats to wilderness and where the potential harm is irreversible
  • Reflect innovative ideas and strategies
  • Build capacity for grantees, when needed

We do not fund:

  • Grants to individuals
  • Land acquisition and capital construction projects
  • Salmon protection or recovery programs
  • Water quality or water allocation programs
  • Sustainable development and other economically based programs
  • Environmental education and environmental justice programs
  • Energy, transportation and air-quality programs

Ending Homelessness. Every activity we support is evaluated against the goal of ending homelessness through leveraging the advocacy and public education needed to ensure public support and/or through innovation in connecting the varied systems needed to ensure comprehensive, cohesive service. Our grants have included support for capital, advocacy and public education, building public will, supportive services and capacity building.

Strengthening nonprofits. Our capacity-building grants are primarily directed to organizations working in our two program areas: wilderness protection and ending homelessness. Additional capacity-building support is invested in intermediary support organizations that serve the nonprofit sector in general.
